New Artificial Intelligence Tool (PrevisIA) Helps Predict Amazon Deforestation
Microsoft has developed a new artificial intelligence tool called PrevisIA that predicts "deforestation hotspots of the Amazon rainforest, where it is estimated that nearly 10,000 square kilometers of the Brazilian Amazon are in imminent danger.
PrevisIA uses artificial intelligence to analyze images provided by European Space Agency satellites, as well as an algorithm developed by the Brazilian conservation nonprofit Imazon, that helps find areas most vulnerable to deforestation.
PrevisIA (from the Portuguese previsão for “forecast” and IA for “artificial intelligence”). The developers said it is applicable to all critical areas on Earth.
The PrevisIA tool will also contribute to taking preventive measures in cooperation with local governments, companies and non-profit organizations that care about the Amazon forest.
